August 2012Energy Service Corps is a joint project of the U.S. Public Interest Research Group Education Fund (PIRG) and AmeriCorps that works to improve energy efficiency throughout the country. This year we are hiring graduating college students to join our program and work to tackle one of the most pressing environmental issues: energy efficiency. We organize service projects that bring together the community, educate local youth in classrooms about the importance of environmental stewardship, and provide our community members with energy assessments and home weatherization.
Throughout our country's history, students have been at the forefront of nearly every social movement. We are currently hiring graduates as AmeriCorps members with PIRG Energy Service Corps. Our Energy Service Corps Organizer position is a 9-month position based on a college campus, working to educate and engage the campus and community around energy efficiency, including overseeing an internship program. We know that students have played a role in all movements to create a better world. You will recruit and train those students to be activists and active citizens. Our Energy Service Corps Organizers have rigorous work schedules often 50 - 60 hours a week. While, it's tough work that involves long hours, the position is extremely rewarding as you will be making direct change in our communities around one of today's most pressing issues.
Educate
Energy Service Corps Organizers work one-on-one with college students to develop educational programs to teach local youth and inform the campus and surrounding community about important environmental issues. Energy Service Corps Organizer oversee an internship program, that gives students the tools necessary to organizing community-based service and education initiatives including community workshops, energy surveys, and volunteer teachers who bring fun hands on lessons into local classrooms.
Inspire and Activate
Energy Service Corps Organizer build active, cohesive and highly visible campus chapters that are recognized by faculty and student leaders as an asset to the campus community. At the same time, organizers work to develop strong community partnerships to ensure that our impact is lasting and on-going in the communities where we serve.

Training & Experience
A key part of USPIRG’s mission is to train leaders who are capable of designing and winning campaigns. PIRG’s Energy Service Corps project conducts extensive and on-going trainings for all Energy Service Corps Organizer. Classroom-style trainings are coupled with real-world, experiential-based learning on site. Organizers must be ready to take what they've learned and dive in, testing out their skills as they learn to make social change in the community.

Qualifications
We are looking for motivated individuals who are willing to work hard and commit themselves to getting results. Candidates must commit to a full-time 9-month term of service with AmeriCorps, during which they must complete a minimum of 1700 hours. We value experience with campus groups or student government, academic achievement, public interest commitment, and outstanding verbal, written and leadership skills. But most of all, we look for people who find a way to make a difference.

Benefits
Candidates must commit to a 9-month term of service with AmeriCorps and complete a minimum of 1700 hours of service, and in return receive a stipend of $11,800 during that time. Upon completion of the program, receive an education award of $5,350 that can be used to pay off student loans or for future education at most colleges and universities for up to seven years. Qualifying loans may also be put on forbearance. Receive health coverage and 2 weeks vacation during the term.
